Here is some information about the minimum requirements for New York car insurance, to help you when getting an online quote. The state of New York requires, at the minimum, that you have coverages for No Fault (Personal Injury Protection), Uninsured Motorists and Liability.
As of June 2009:
No Fault (Personal Injury Protection) Limits: Up to $50,000.
Bodily Injury Liability: Minimum $25,000 for bodily injury not resulting in death and $50,000 for injury resulting in death, any one person in any one accident. Minimum $50,000 for bodily injury not resulting in death and $100,000 for injury resulting in death for two or more persons in any one accident.
Property Liability: Minimum is $10,000 per accident.
Uninsured Motorists Limits: Same minimum limits as Bodily Injury Liability.
