Auto insurance is required in New Jersey. There are two common types of auto insurance policies in New Jersey: Standard and Basic. At the minimum, you are required to have a Basic Policy. 

As of June 2009: 

Basic Policy: Optional $10,000 coverage for Bodily Injury Liability. 

$5,000 per accident Property Damage Liability. 

Personal Injury Protection of $15,000 per person per accident up to $250,000. 

Standard Policy: Minimum of $15,000 Bodily Injury coverage per person, per accident up to $30,000 for all persons per accident. 

Minimum of $5,000 Property Damage Liability per person. 

Personal Injury Protection is up to $250,000 per person per accident. 

Uninsured Motorist Coverage — available up to the liability amounts.
