It's mandatory in Hawaii for owners of registered vehicles to have auto insurance and carry a valid proof of insurance card throughout the ownership period. Hawaii is a "no-fault" insurance state and has some minimum requirements for coverage. Keep in mind that the following are minimum amounts and you may want to have more coverage. 

Hawaii requires minimum coverages for Bodily Injury Protection, Property Damage and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) on your auto insurance policy. As of June 2009:

Bodily Injury Protection: Minimum of $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident.

Property Damage: Minimum of $10,000 per accident.

Personal Injury Protection: $10,000 per person.
