Buying health insurance may seem expensive, but there are some things you can do to lower your costs.

What you pay for health insurance depends upon a lot of factors, including:

— The type of medical expenses you want covered

— Your deductibles

— Whether you need certain specialists

— Whether you use physicians within an insurance company’s network

— Your current medical conditions

Here are some tips to help you find the cheapest health insurance. Remember, though, “cheap” doesn’t always mean “better.” You want to find the right price for the right coverage for you and your family's situation:

Determine the medical expenses you want covered. If you don’t want too many out-of-pocket expenses, a comprehensive like an HMO can be good choice. You may get a lower premium if you can get higher deductibles and make your health insurance more affordable. However, if you have no dependents and feel you can pay for routine doctor visits and laboratory work out of your own pocket, you may want to consider a policy that just covers catastrophic illness.

Look into a Health Savings Account (HSA) and high deductible health insurance. An HSA is a special tax-free savings account that allows you to pay qualified medical expenses. You are usually required to buy a high-deductible health plan as well. High deductible health insurance has a lower premium than other types of plans, and the combination with a tax-free HSA could save you quite a bit of money.

Shop around for quotes on health insurance. The types of plans offered are often the same, whether you’re getting individual health coverage or group health coverage. It pays to shop around and compare health insurance plans, quotes, specific coverages, co-payments and more.

Talk to an independent agent. It can get quite confusing trying to compare different health plans. An independent agent can show you plans from different companies and help explain the differences.

Can you get group insurance? Compare your employer’s health plan with others. If you don’t have the option for health coverage at work, consider an association or other group for possible savings on health insurance. If you’re a self-employed sole proprietor you may be able to buy insurance as a business.
